Predictive maintenance had always been a problem on mobile units such a as propulsion group on train or subways. 01dB-Metravib smart online monitoring system OneproD-MVX now provides a dedicated and cost effective solution to solve this problem.
The Mobile Propulsion group Reliability System (MPRS) allows to continuously monitor the most important information relative to motors, gearboxes and transmission health: vibration, oil quality and process parameters.

Principle

The main characteristic of this specific application is the variability of the operating conditions. The train barely shows the same operating conditions (speed, load, etc...) for long and predictable periods of time. Hence, to get useful data the monitoring system must be able to deal with these conditions. In other words, that means detecting the right periods for measurements and then taking instant and simultaneous readings (or close to instantaneously). Also, to avoid bulk of data, data reduction must be performed onboard to store meaningful information which must be transferred as soon as the train reaches to the workshop.

The proposed system is based on the popular OneproD-MVX online system and OneproD-XPR predictive maintenance and analysis software.

PMRS: an adapted monitoring system

To fulfill the objectives, the MPRS is endowed with the 4 main f

  • 1) Adapted sensors managements allowing gearboxes, motor and bearing monitoring and analysis.
The MPMS is designed to acquire a large variety of sensors.
    * Vibration sensors for detection and diagnosis of defects such as rolling element bearing defects (pitting, greasing, etc...), misalignment, unbalance, looseness or gear defects (teeth cracks, general wear, broken teeth, etc...).
    * Oil analysis sensors (mainly total ferrous debris sensor and oil condition sensor) allow for sharpened detection and analysis capabilities. They also play an important role in the optimization of the oil replacement program.
  • 2) Automatic diagnosis capabilities
The MPRS embedded processing capabilities to process the data in real time. The outcome is fast and accurate information regarding the propulsion group mechanical and electrical status.  It also avoids useless bulk of data. Synthetic results can be displayed on the driver dashboard or directly transmitted to the centralized train control and maintenance system.

  • 3) The right measurements at the right time
One of the most challenging problems to solve for online monitoring on mobile propulsion groups is the ever changing working conditions. Measurements must be performed at specifics and known working conditions to be pertinent. Indeed, how to set thresholds or compare measurements if the readings are taken at random speeds or during acceleration?

Thanks to OneproD-MVX the MPRS takes into account all these working conditions and adds the capabilities to set different measurements for different regime.

Beside the operating condition management, OneproD-MVX also gets all the measurements at once - before the operating conditions are modified again. This unique feature allows for taking a global snapshot of the propulsion group in only few seconds whereas "standard methods" required minutes (tens of minutes in case of  scanning systems) for similar measurements. The outcome is not only a faster response but most of all a superior detection and diagnosis.
The measured values include, but not limited to: time waveforms, spectrums, enveloping, overall levels, etc...

  • 4) Storage and automatic uploading routine
With the MPRS all processed data are stored in the system up to the moment where OneproD-MVX is wired/wireless re-connected to the network bearing the OneproD-XPR predictive maintenance platform. Data are then transferred to a centralized or local database. Alarm SMS or email notifications can be set if required as well as communication with Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS) if needed

Benefits

The Mobile Propulsion group Reliability System shaped around OneproD-MVX monitoring system associated with OneproD-XPR predictive maintenance software is the one-stop solution to increase the reliability of mobile propulsion groups. Key benefits are:

* Increase train reliability
* Avoid trains stopped on tracks due to mechanical or electrical failure
* Drastically reduce the systematic maintenance and optimise maintenance costs
* Provide inside information on the mechanical and electrical status, which where not accessible before
* Reduce the severity of failures
* Provide real-time information for fleet management.
* Increase the availability/reliability of the fleet
* Make anticipation of unscheduled repairs possible and reduce maintenance time
* Increase overall safety for customer
* Low investment cost for quick return on investment
